Trade Mark Practitioner's Exam

  1. “PASSED” means passed in examination held specifically for the Trade Mark Practitioners’ examination by this Institute.
  2. “EXEMPTION CLAIMED” – exemption from writing an examination may be granted on the basis of equivalent examinations held by the Patent Examinations Board having been passed (proof to be submitted on first entering examinations).
  3. TRADE MARK PRACTITIONERS’ PRACTICE: Candidates applying to write this subject must:
    1. have passed or been exempted from all other subjects:
    2. be and admitted attorney (proof to be submitted); and
  4. ON FIRST ENTERING for these exams the following information is required:
    1. details (plus copies) of matriculation or equivalent examination passed; and
    2. details of other academic qualifications
  5. FEES – The following annual non-refundable fees are payable on registration – this entry form will not be processed until payment is received in full;
    1. Registration fee – R1000-00 per annum
    2. Student Membership fee – R2000-00 per annum
    3. Tuition Fees:
      Programme Group 1 – R1000 each
      Programme Group 2 – R1000 each
    4. Examination Fee
      Examination Fee Group 1 – R1000 each
      Examination fee Group 2 – R1000 eachSupplementary, special and aegrotat – R1000 per paper or oral exam (only due later in the year once possible eligibility to sit such exam is communicated)

Note that this fee breakdown is provided for information purposes only. Registration, membership and examination fees are not refundable and will be forfeited if a candidate is not able to attend workshops or lectures, and/or does not sit the examination.

Students need to provide their name and surname as reference when electronic payments are made. Proof of payment should be e-mailed to SAIIPL’s accountants at tshegofatsom@zuvafs.co.za , and copied to saiipl@saiipl.co.za, and attached to the application form. Upon proof of payment, the registration will be finalised, and student numbers generated.

  1. The entry forms will be accepted up until 30th January of the year in which the examinations are to be written. Late entries will only be accepted with the approval of Council where good reason for such late entry has been provided and upon payment of an additional late registration penalty fee of R800-00.
  2. Lectures and/or training workshops are scheduled at the relevant Examiners’ convenience but are usually hosted online sometime during the months of March and/or April. Final dates will be circulated as soon as possible and usually towards the end of February each year. The online lectures and workshops are recorded and can be made available to students, but on day attendance is advisable so that questions can be asked and answered on the day.
  3. Written examinations for all Group 1 and Group 2 exams are usually held in the last week of June and the first week of July. Only 1 exam date per year is scheduled, and if students are not able to write the exam on the day, there will be no refund and no alternative date. Students must therefore plan accordingly.
  4. Students that qualify for and are awarded a supplementary exam (within Council’s absolute discretion) in any Group 1 subject should note that these examinations will be conducted either in person or online, at the discretion of the Examiner. Where in-person attendance is required, students will be required to travel to either Johannesburg or Cape Town. The supplementary examinations are scheduled at the relevant Examiner’s convenience but are generally conducted during October each year.
  5. Students that qualify for the Group 2 oral exam, having passed all 5 Group 1 subjects, plus both Group 2 written exams, should note that in-person attendance for the panel interview oral exam will be required in either Johannesburg or Cape Town. The oral exam cannot be conducted online. The oral scheduled at the relevant Examiners’ convenience are usually conducted during October each year.
